Outland Design was retained by UBC Properties Trust to undertake conceptual landscape planning, design development and contract administration services for a student residence at the Okanagan campus of the University of British Columbia. The Okanagan campus of UBC opened in 2005 and has since expanded to accommodate over 7500 students. As a result, the Okanagan campus has seen extensive development of its accommodation facilities. The Upper Cascades and Nicola residence buildings were the first residence projects on which Outland Design worked with UBC Properties Trust. The Cassiar Residence fronts onto International Mews, a pedestrian oriented, north-south driveway and the University Commons, and contains the accommodations for summertime conferences. The design of the site incorporated small seating plazas, a formal allee of trees along International Mews and native pockets of tree and shrub plantings on the hillside at the rear of the building. Landscape construction improvements for the residence were undertaken by Westwind Nurseries and Landscaping Limited.
